NAPLES SCORE Helps Fish for
Savings at Everglades Angler

Mark and Dorothy Ward started Everglades Angler, a fishing and retail goods business, in March 1993. In September of 2003, Mark heard about SCORE while reading the Naples Daily News and decided to initiate a business mentoring relationship with SCORE Counselor and Past Chairman Henry Rambacher.

Henry and Mark conferred together for twelve sessions, looking at various aspects of the business including materials management, purchasing, sales, inventory control, liquidation, human resources, leasing and business management. Mark credits Henry with offering suggestions that led to him being able to reduce expenses and increase his margins. Additionally, through their sessions together, they came to the conclusion that more advertising was necessary in order to increase traffic to their shopping store & dining area.

Henry also got Mark involved in several of SCORE's Workshops, including topics such as Marketing, Using Your Computer, and Bookkeeping (a workshop taught by Henry!).

'Henry has helped us move forward to a place where we can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel!' says Mark while reflecting on the SCORE counseling sessions.

Everglades Angler offers fishing charters with experienced guides, including backcountry fishing, coastal and off-shore fishing and deep-sea fishing. They have a retail store that is fully stocked with a complete selection of men's and women's outdoor and resort clothing, fly fishing equipment, accessories and gifts. And, one Saturday a month, they teach fly fishing classes.

SCORE's counseling services are all at no cost. SCORE offers counseling sessions on a one-on-one basis as well as workshops. E-mail counseling is offered as well to those who are out of the area, or prefer a cyber-meeting. SCORE is a partner of the U.S. Small Business Administration with close to 12,000 members and more than 350 chapters nationwide.

The Naples chapter ran 13 workshops last year with a total of 303 business people in attendance. Additionally, the chapter counseled 480 clients in face-to-face sessions.
