Lely High School students get real-world experience at corner store
Friday, January 22, 2010 (Reprinted with permission)
NAPLES — The newly opened Lely High Corner Store is giving Lely High School students entrepreneurial experience and an opportunity to prepare for life after graduation.
“This is an opportunity for the kids to get job skills (through) a school-based enterprise, which is helping them develop their entrepreneurial job skills,” said Dr. Katrina Nedley, who manages the Network for Students with Emotional Disabilities project.
The school celebrated the grand opening of the completely student-run store on Thursday during its lunch period. The Corner Store — which occupies a space that was previously used as a storage room for the wrestling team’s mats — is the fruit of the labor put forth by the students who are enrolled in a career development class, which gave them the opportunity to develop the business from the ground up.

Starting a Successful Pet Bird Shop Without Winging It
Maryann Fritzpatrick translated her part-time work with pet birds in an aviary into a full-time job in her own shop, It’s for the Birds, which opened earlier this year in Naples. Her former experience helped her gain specialized training in nutrition, reproduction and behavior of pet birds. She became an American Federation of Aviculture Certified Aviculturist.
When the aviary, where Maryann worked, closed in April 2008, there was a need of similar services and that is when she opened a store at Flamingo Island flea market on a part time basis. However, it had always been her dream to have her own bird store as a full time business, Before making that commitment, she decided to first consult with SCORE Naples to determine whether or not it would be feasible.
