Starting a Successful Pet Bird Shop Without Winging It
Maryann Fritzpatrick translated her part-time work with pet birds in an aviary into a full-time job in her own shop, It’s for the Birds, which opened earlier this year in Naples. Her former experience helped her gain specialized training in nutrition, reproduction and behavior of pet birds. She became an American Federation of Aviculture Certified Aviculturist.
When the aviary, where Maryann worked, closed in April 2008, there was a need of similar services and that is when she opened a store at Flamingo Island flea market on a part time basis. However, it had always been her dream to have her own bird store as a full time business, Before making that commitment, she decided to first consult with SCORE Naples to determine whether or not it would be feasible.

At the time we were exploring the options of either selling the business or bringing in an investor to inject some additional capital into the magazine. Neither my former partner nor I had any experience with these types of transactions. We needed guidance, but a high priced law firm simply wasn't in our budget."
