Choosing the Most Effective Retail Advertising
Because each business
is different, there is no one answer that will
fit all situations.
Hershey's Chocolate made a fortune without advertising for many
years. Other companies - e.g., Proctor & Gamble - made a
fortune by spending a fortune successfully establishing their
many brands.
Each advertising medium - be it television, radio, newspapers or direct mail, to name but a few - has its own success stories that seemingly document why their medium is the right one for you. Assuming that you have a very limited budget, and your Business Plan can justify spending a certain amount of investment for advertising, then a rule of thumb would be to single out a portion of your budget and try to zero in on that small segment of your best potential customers with sufficient frequency to maintain desirable awareness. Assuming you have pinpointed your target audience, and examined your Business Plan, before you spend a penny of your hard earned money on advertising, invest in the most effective form of advertising: Word of Mouth directed towards your hard care immediate customers. This involves ensuring that you are giving full value to these important people via special discounts, creating an atmosphere in your place of business that is pleasing to your current customers. They, in turn, will help spread the right Word of Mouth. Included here would be developing excellent public relations with your immediate neighborhood. After this has been established, take the final step: sit down with representatives of the various media, let them know your objectives and your budget. Let them get back to you with a Media Plan that they feel will best serve your needs. Pick the plan that you feel most comfortable with - and only pick one medium. Don't make the mistake of spreading your dollars over a myriad of media. One final caveat: Once you've committed yourself, hang tight and give your decision a fair chance to work. You'll be pleased to find that your media representative is in it for the long haul too - so give him or her the opportunity to be a true partner. Good Luck! This Month's Business Links on the Web:
